A long time ago (before Covid) in a brewpub not so far away…

Our first “pub church” gathering was held May 4, 2014, when about 30 people came together at MBC for a conversation about the intersections of story, art, faith, and community.

From our very first gathering, the sense of care, authenticity, and vulnerability that marks a true community were evident. We discussed the hard topics you couldn’t talk about in church, and we welcomed songwriters, storytellers, artists, poets, authors, activists, and more to be guest speakers. Many of those folks fell in love with our community and stuck around.

When we moved online during the global Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, we found a new way to connect with each other and with people from around the US and even a couple other spots on the globe. Today, we’re still going strong as a vibrant and vital online community of folks focused on justice and liberation.

We’ve grown and evolved in many ways in the past decade, from a local gathering of folks feeling frustrated with the institutional church to a full-fledged community for spiritual exiles. In 2019 we launched our companion content website, Accidental Tomatoes, where you can find blog entries and podcast episodes that align with our community ethos. And in 2022, we formed New Wineskins Network, Inc., a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting small membership justice-oriented faith communities.

In addition, we’ve raised money for a number of causes we’re passionate about and co-sponsored activities like Out MOV’s Pride in the Park and the Thirsty Goose beer tent at the Wild Goose Festival. And as a dispersed community, we work to inspire and empower people to pursue the issues that matter to us in the various and diverse spaces we occupy.

We hope you can join us either in person or online for our big 10th Anniversary Shindig as we celebrate all of you who make this incredible community what it is today!
