How an ancient story of exile and return can inform our 21st Century American cultural context

In Chapter 24 of the Gospel of Luke, the writer tells a story about two of Jesus’ disciples returning from Jerusalem to their hometown of Emmaus following his crucifixion.

On the surface, we might find this story familiar. Many of us are experiencing the disappointment and depression of dashed expectations in the wake of this week’s election. We’re trying to figure out what to do next.

We might even be looking for a savior.

But what if, in a sense, this story is not just for us, the people who were hoping to overturn the powers and principalities of corruption, racism, homophobia, greed, ableism, misogyny, and nationalism?

What if it’s a story for America?

For the world?
