“Kenosis” is one of those big seminary words that preachers use a lot but that most folks don‘t understand.
In its simplest form, it means “emptying”…and in biblical tradition, it refers to Jesus‘ emptying of his own human will in order to be fully receptive to divine will.
But what does that mean in pragmatic terms for us today? What does it mean for us to empty ourselves? And what, specifically, should we empty ourselves of?
In a time when we‘re becoming more and more deeply aware of inherent and institutional biases, of systemic injustices, and of a whole host of supremecist narratives in the church, what are the things we need to give away? Our privilege? Our comfort? Our platforms?
And how do we empty ourselves not as individuals, but as communities working together for the common good?
