One thing many of us have been taught in our various Christian traditions is that the thing Jesus refers to as “the Kingdom of God/Heaven” is something that is “here but not yet.”
The inference, of course, is that Jesus has inaugurated something that already fully exists, but has not yet come to be fully realized…or, perhaps more accurately, fully known and appreciated.
In our discussion video from The Work of the People this week, British author and Anglican priest Malcom Guite compares that tension between now and not yet to the complexities of a fine single malt Scotch. It is, Guite notes, a thing that is good in itself, but points beyond itself to something even better.
The problem, he points out, comes when we try to make the good thing the substitute for the better thing toward which it is guiding us.
So what is the better thing beyond the good thing that resurrection is trying to reveal to us?
We hope you’ll join us in the Virtual Theology Pub powered by Zoom this Sunday, May 18, for a discussion about “beyondness” and the transformation we must go through in order to experience it.
6:00pm ET: Happy Half-Hour (informal meet & greet time)
6:30pm ET: Presentation & conversation begin

It’s our Anniversary Month! Make a donation to our network today!
On May 4, 2014, New Wineskins was launched as a pub theology group in the side room of the Marietta Brewing Company in southeastern Ohio. Today, we’re a vibrant online community with participants from many different parts of the US and the occasional visitor from abroad.
As our community has grown and evolved, so has our vision. Not only do we conduct weekly Zoom gatherings for conversational theology, but we also aim to connect with other folks who share our values for justice and liberation.
The New Wineskins Network is one way we share that connection with affiliates and partners. Through event sponsorships, micro grants, and more, we seek to support organizations and projects that reflect our values. As the saying goes, a rising tide lifts all ships!
You can be part of our ongoing work by making either a one-time gift or an ongoing donation through our easy online giving portal. Just click below to make your contribution now!
