“You have heard that it was said…but I say to you…”
Much of Christianity as we know it leans heavily into what has been passed on from generation to generation. Our rituals, our doctrines, even the ways and places in which we gather are clearly more informed by our traditions than by the actual words and actions of Jesus.
But as more and more people seem to be realizing that what our churches say and do comes in direct opposition to what Jesus said and did, we have to ask ourselves…are we missing the point?
This week at New Wineskins we’ll continue our early 2025 dive into the Sermon on the Mount with a look at Jesus’ central teachings in Matthew 5:21-48 where he challenges tradition by uncovering the divine intent behind it. We’ll be guided in our conversation by a 2020 homily by Fr. Richard Rohr where his message emphasizes the way the Christian church has strayed from Jesus’ core teachings in favor of cultural and political influence.
Please join us this Sunday, Jan. 26 in the New Wineskins Virtual Theology Pub powered by Zoom as we discuss the many ways in which modern Christianity is missing the point and exactly what we can do about it.
6:00pm ET: Happy Half-Hour (informal meet & greet time)
6:30pm ET: Presentation & conversation begin
