Aug. 25 Gathering: “To Be In Awe”

(Wisdom Series Week 1)

In 1 Kings 3, a freshly-anointed King Solomon famously has a dream in which he hears God promise to give him whatever he desires. Somewhat surprisingly, Solomon requests not wealth nor fame nor long life, but a spirit of discernment…in other words, he asks for Wisdom.

Many progressive theologians frame the Bible within deep traditions of wisdom literature. The point of scripture, in their view, is not to produce a dogmatic belief system aimed at the afterlife, but rather to encourage growth—both individually and corporately—along the path of wisdom in this life.

Beginning this Sunday, we’ll kick off a 6-week series of gatherings focused on Wisdom. We’ll look at sources from both the spiritual and secular worlds to spark a dialogue about what wisdom is, how we pursue it, and the ways we integrate it into our lives and communities.

This week, we’ll view a video by YouTube content creators Reflections of Life titled, “To Be In Awe – Wisdom from a 96-Year-Old” and discuss the various ways the simple yet wildly complex act of growing old offers fresh and surprising perspectives on life.

Please join us this Sunday, Aug. 25, in the New Wineskins Virtual Theology Pub powered by Zoom for the first week of what promises to be a rich and dynamic conversation about the mysteries of Wisdom.

6:00pm ET: Happy Half-Hour (informal meet & greet time)
6:30pm ET: Presentation & conversation begin
