In a social and political climate where people calling themselves Christian commit endless atrocities in defense of their faith, it seems like it’s getting harder and harder for people seeking to follow the way of Jesus to identify with the religion that bears his title.
But it also seems like once you see the radical, revolutionary, subversive way that Jesus lived, there’s no way to return to the status quo.
And so we’re often left with a conundrum: do we remain part of our churches and the American Christian cultural experience, or do we cut ties with the institutions that uphold cultural Christianity at the expense of the most vulnerable among us?
This week at New Wineskins, we’ll hear from pastor and author Brian Zahnd about the journey away from what he calls “Christianity American style” into a more authentic and, admittedly, more challenging experience of the Jesus Way…a journey he compares to graduating from grape juice to fine wine. In our discussion video, Zahnd challenges us to find ways to become part of an alternative culture that rejects the systemic sin of the American empire, despite our participation—and often our complicity—in that very system.
