Often when we speak of mystical experiences we invoke grand visions of mountaintops or seascapes, the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, or the intimacy of a walk in the woods.
And while those types of encounters are certainly beautiful and meaningful, they are also inaccessible to many, many people. Not everyone can afford a ticket to the burning bush.
So how does the Divine show up in the ordinary? Where can we find transcendence in the midst of the mundane?
This week at New Wineskins, our discussion video from The Work of the People features theologian, psychologist, and author Richard Beck, Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at Abilene Christian University. In what Dr. Beck calls “Apocalyptic Mysticism,” he cites the need for us to learn to discover “a mystical encounter with God that is shocking, subversive, and unexpected.”
Please join us this Sunday, May 26, in the New Wineskins Virtual Theology Pub powered by Zoom as we talk about the various ways we can learn to encounter the Divine in the ordinary and the spiritual practices that might help open us to what Dr. Beck calls “an invasive act of God that interrupts us.”
6:00pm ET: Happy Half-Hour (informal meet & greet time)
6:30pm ET: Presentation & conversation begin
