June 4 Gathering: Healing the Blind Man

Bible Stories for Grown-Ups Chapter 6

What if the journey is the point?

Many of us have been going through life with an inherited theology that insists on correct answers to questions, the comfort of certainty, and the unassailable position of “being right.”

In that framework, the stories of Jesus performing miracles of healing seem clearly to demonstrate his divinity. After all, who but God could reverse a lifetime of blindness with a little spit and some well-chosen words?

But what if Jesus’ divinity isn’t really the point? What if it’s not really even about the blind man?

What if it’s about us?

This week at New Wineskins we’ll discuss Chapter 6 of Bible Stories for Grown-Ups, where we encounter this particular healing scene, examine it within its context in the Gospel of Mark, and consider specifically how this and other miracles are less about proving that Jesus = God and more about encouraging those of us trying to follow the way of Jesus to continue to learn and grow over time?

Join us this Sunday, June 4, in the New Wineskins Virtual Theology Pub powered by Zoom for a conversation about the ways in which the journey of faith is its own destination, and how Jesus is leading us along that path not through adhering to rigid doctrine, but learning day by day how to love our neighbors—and ourselves—better and more fully.

6:00pm ET: Happy Half-Hour (informal meet & greet time)
6:30pm ET: Presentation & conversation begin
