April 13 Gathering: Justice & Wholeness (Palm Sunday)

What we in the Western Christian tradition have come to know as Palm Sunday is often viewed through the lens of liberation theology as a counter narrative to the dominant construct of empire. While the Roman armies rode triumphantly into Jerusalem on the backs of warhorses, Jesus comes in on the back of a donkey, clearly mocking the pomp and circumstance of the imperial cult.

In our 21st Century world we might ask ourselves what a present-day counter narrative might look like…how do we upend systems of inequity and exploitation without selling out to the tools of violence and oppression on which the empire relies?

This week at New Wineskins we’ll wrap up our Lenten journey From Pain to Possibility with an important conversation about how the struggle for justice is not only about freeing people from exploitation and oppression, but creating wholeness in a society that seems bent on remaining broken.

Our discussion video from The Work of the People this week features multifaith leader Rev. Jen Bailey, author and organizer Micky ScottBey Jones, and theologian & ethicist Dr. Roberto Che Espinoza* discussing the ways that healing happens in environments of radical sharing and how centering the voices of those who have been shut out of the shaping of society offers a path to reimagine our world and the ways we structure community.

We hope you’ll join us this Sunday, April 13, in the Virtual Theology Pub powered by Zoom as we discuss the powers of healing justice and mutual belonging that just might help us create a better world.

*Dr. Roberto is a trans man who is referred to by his previous names in some older online spaces, including our discussion video from The Work of the People. We honor his current name and identity despite the dated reference of the video.
