In Southern West Virginia and around the Central Appalachian coalfields, water taps run foul from polluted groundwater entering both private and municipal systems. The problem is not new…many reports indicate that some communities have not had clean water to drink, bathe, or wash clothes in for half a century or more.
So while it should be no surprise that residents of those communities are once again raising their voices in the State Legislature for water infrastructure improvements, what might be surprising is who’s leading the charge: a faith community that has coalesced under the liberating good news of the “Holler Gospel.”
Long-time friend of New Wineskins Brad Davis is among those putting a public face on the crisis. So much so, in fact, that the CBS News Magazine 60 Minutes featured him and other local residents in a profile on the lack of clean water and other economic and cultural issues facing the people of McDowell County, WV, and the surrounding area.
This month at New Wineskins, Brad will offer some commentary on the 60 Minutes piece and share with us some encouragement as to how we can get involved to help our neighbors in the Coalfields.
