As the US hurtles toward its quadrennial presidential election and as the political sands in our nation are shifting more rapidly than ever before, much of the conversation seems to be centering on how faith and politics should or should not work together.
On the one side, white Christian nationalists appear bent on forcing their worldview on everyone, creating a narrow theocratic framework for our society that oddly has little or nothing to do with the teachings of Jesus.
On the other side, progressive Christians who have long advocated for social justice and inclusion but have done little to influence actual public policy are facing a reckoning of their own.
So what are folks who claim the name of the Christ supposed to do? Can we finally extract ourselves from dogmatic thinking and academic navel-gazing to do the hard work of caring for our neighbors, loving our enemies, and bringing the reality Jesus imagined to life not just as individuals, but as a society?
This week at New Wineskins we’ll kick off a 3-week series on Faith and Politics where we’ll discuss the politics of Jesus, the declining relevance of the institutional church in public life, and why calling out and questioning harmful theological constructs of politics is more important now than ever.
We’ll start our series by viewing a video from The Work of the People featuring professor, author, and social activist Rev. Dr. Miguel De La Torre sharing his views on the church’s complicity in systems of oppression and the surprising places where hope can show up.
Please join us this Sunday, Aug. 4, in the New Wineskins Virtual Theology Pub powered by Zoom for a conversation about what the church can do to break free of the influence of Empire.
6:00pm ET: Happy Half-Hour (informal meet & greet time)
6:30pm ET: Presentation & conversation begin
