Breaking Binaries Part 1
Right or wrong? Good or evil? In or out?
Life—and especially, it seems, religious life—seems full of these either-or choices. Do you believe the Bible or not? Is believing that Jesus is God the only way to salvation or not? Are you going to heaven or hell when you die?
But what if the binaries we present as truths are inadequate? What if our two-sided arguments take us further away from, rather than deeper into, the heart of the Divine?
And what if we began to see breaking free of binary thinking as a revolutionary act of resistance in a dualistic world?
This week at New Wineskins we’ll kick off a 2-part series we’re calling “Breaking Binaries” featuring brief interviews with author, pastor, and teacher Barbara Brown Taylor as she leads us into the ways we can begin to dismantle dualistic thinking by examining our perspectives and imagining possibilities.
Our discussion video from The Work of the People titled ”Defeating Dualism” invites us to see that even when we think we know the answers, we still often don’t have the full picture in view.
Please join us this Sunday, Nov. 17, in the New Wineskins Virtual Theology Pub powered by Zoom for a conversation about how breaking away from dualistic thinking can open us to richer relationships and a more open experience of life.
6:00pm ET: Happy Half-Hour (informal meet & greet time)
6:30pm ET: Presentation & conversation begin
