Awakening: Week 4

Moses said to Hobab the Midianite, Reuel’s son and Moses’ father-in-law, “We’re marching to the place about which the Lord has said, ‘I’ll give it to you.’ Come with us and we’ll treat you well, for the Lord has promised to treat Israel well.” Hobab said to him, “I won’t go; I’d rather go to my land and to my folk.” Moses said, “Please don’t abandon us, for you know where we can camp in the desert, and you can be our eyes. If you go with us, whatever good the Lord does for us, we’ll do for you.”

Num. 10:29-32 (CEB)

Many of us have spent years being taught that the Church is God’s presence in the world. That those of us who claim the mantle of “Christianity” are the sole purveyors of Divine wisdom and grace for the rest of the world.

But what if we’ve got it backwards? What if the real agents of God’s work in the world are the strangers, the outcasts, the foreigners?

What if we learned to see ourselves more as guests than as hosts?

This week at New Wineskins we’ll continue our post-Epiphany series on Awakening by discussing the ways we discover love and grace through the other.

Please join us this Sunday, Jan. 28, in the New Wineskins Virtual Theology Pub powered by Zoom for a conversation about awakening to the divine through our interactions with people who may not look, think, or believe the way we do. This week’s discussion video from The Work of the People features theologian and philosopher Richard Beck examining the story of Hobab from Num. 10:29-32 and its relevance to where Christianity today might take its cues to become more open, generous, and inclusive.
