“Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?”

1 Corinthians 6:14

In our pluralistic culture, more religious and non-religious traditions exist within the same space than perhaps any time in modern history. Interestingly, even as many Christian communities bemoan this diversity of belief systems and worldviews, we find ourselves in a time not at all unlike that of Paul and the early church.

That means that our cities, our workplaces, our communities, our neighborhoods, and even our homes may contain people of multiple faiths.

So how are those of us who follow Jesus called to interact with Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Atheists, Pantheists, Zoroastrians, Wiccans, or others? Do we tolerate them in our towns and businesses but exclude them from our dinner tables or wedding beds? Is our sole purpose to “convert” them to our way of thinking?

Or does Jesus call us to something different, something more holistic? Do we take Paul’s words to the church in Corinth at face value, or might there be a particular contextual reality to consider that might better inform our present circumstances?

This Sunday, we’ll explore the question of whether the church in the postmodern era can faithfully follow Jesus while honoring other traditions, and how exclusive a claim “Christians” may or may not have on the Kingdom of God.
