An Alternative World Communion Sunday Liturgy

What if we could see the sacraments not just as rites we participate in as individuals for our own private spiritual experiences, but as subversive acts that emancipate whole communities and liberate those who exist on the margins of public policy and institutions?

Since 1933, faith communities have observed the first Sunday in October as World Communion Sunday, a day to celebrate both the diversity and unity of people seeking to follow the way of Jesus.

At New Wineskins, we’ve celebrated World Communion Sunday with alternative forms of the Eucharistic feast since 2016.

This Sunday, Lisa McKee, Brad Davis, and Joe Webb will preside at our virtual table as we participate together in a different kind of communion service that calls us to be a community of people formed for acts of justice, mercy, compassion, and equity in our world.

As part of our celebration, we’ll engage with a video by renowned biblical scholar and public theologian Walter Brueggemann and discuss how the Eucharist invites us to become characters in what he calls “a drama of abundance” that “transfer(s) our confessional liturgic claims into the rhetoric of public policy.”

You’re invited to supply your own elements (bread, crackers, wine, juice, etc.), which will become part of our shared feast as we participate together in a virtual alternative liturgy designed specifically for this event.
