One of the foundational principles for Richard Rohr’s Center for Action and Contemplation is that “The best criticism of the bad is the practice of the better.”

As we stand in the aftermath of an attempted coup on the United States government instigated by its own president, we are understandably shaken, angry, and maybe even more than a little bit frightened.

So what can we do?

It’s tempting to try to shout light into the darkness by casting blame on all of the very obvious sources of evil that precipitated the events of Jan. 6 2021. But we know that words without action are empty.

As a spiritual practice for our community as we enter the season after Epiphany and preparation for Lent, we’re going to embark together on a journey called “Seeking Aliveness.” For the next four weeks, we’ll engage together with a series of videos produced by The Work of the People featuring author, speaker, and activist Brian McLaren.

This week at New Wineskins we’ll start the journey by reflecting on how we view our faith traditions in light of their influence on our public lives, and how our participation in New Wineskins can help us institute practices of the better that help us criticize the bad.
