Oct. 30 Gathering: Where are the Prophets?

Among the most dramatic roles in the Old Testament was that of the prophet. Advisors to kings, judges of the nation, and oracles to the people, the prophets played a crucial function in the theological history of Israel.

Contrary to common belief, the primary job of the prophet was not to foresee the future, but to critique the present. The prophets were able to assess Israel’s situation and proclaim warnings about the consequences of the nation’s actions. They had the uncanny ability to see through the vice and corruption all around them and where it would ultimately lead.

God used the prophets to correct Israel when it wandered away from its vocation to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, and to remind the people of God’s promise to redeem the world through God’s chosen people.

Aside from Jesus and John the Baptist, prophets pretty much disappear from the scene of the New Testament world.

But are there still prophetic voices among us? Where would we find them? And how would we know if we did?

This week at New Wineskins, we’ll discuss who the prophets of our time might be through music, video, literature, spoken word, and other media; and we’ll see what our responses to their messages might teach us about God’s continuing work in the world today.

Join us this Sunday, Oct. 39, in the 167 Side Room of the Marietta Brewing Company and be part of the conversaton!

Happy Half-Hour: 6:30pm

Conversation Begins: 7:00pm
